THE "IDEAL UNIVERSE" AND YOU OCTOBER 2, 2006. My tele-workshop, THE ERA OF MAGIC RETURNS, begins on Oct. 3. You can still sign up by clicking on the link above. Even if you can't make all 3 live calls, you automatically get CDs or mp3 files of the entire workshop. If you sign up before the first live session, you'll also get a bonus hour of audio (mp3) after the workshop is over. Down through the corridors of time, many people have searched for "the ideal universe." This search has taken many forms. In The Republic, Plato alluded to a place where the ideal and the perfect could be found. He presented a scenario in which humans were living their ordinary lives among "shadows." These shadows were imperfect copies of "the real thing." Every object we see on Earth is really only a shadow of its perfect form that exists in that "other space." The best literary depiction of this I've ever found is CS Lewis' final book in the Narnia series, THE LAST BATTLE. It's quite a wonderful invention. Even though I'm not interested in Lewis' underlying religious themes, his poetic rendition is stirring. However, this reaching for the ideal as a place outside ourselves, located in the who-knows-where, overlooks a central fact. We invent. We create. We imagine. Each one of us. The whole notion of an independent external ideal place...well, let's put it this way: this notion is USED by countless numbers of people so they can avoid the creative act. "Well, if everything I'm looking for can be found in an ideal universe, if I have nothing to do with creating that place, then my best course of action is to seek it out." That impulse guides much of human history. There is another path. The one along which YOU create. Think about it this way. Of the thousands and thousands of science fiction novels that have been INVENTED by authors, novels that depict other spaces and times and worlds, how many focus on the CREATIVE POWER of individuals? Very, very few. And yet there the writer is, creating his novel, creating every detail of it. What a gigantic joke. When creative power and what it can do is the center, all sorts of tremendous facts emerge. Most importantly, the individual, the YOU, emerges. And that's the starting point for my workshop.
