NEWS SOURCES CAUTIOUS ON PENTAGON MOLE
. Mainstream news outlets are taking a cautious position on the breaking CBS story that a Pentagon mole is an Israeli agent.
Many of these outlets are posting a short Reuters release. All of these outlets are referencing the CBS piece. CNN just interviewed "terrorism expert" Steve Emerson. Emerson stressed that not much is known about the situation at this point.
So CBS is hanging out there on a limb, with its contention.
Curiously, no one (except me) is asking why the Pentagon and the FBI are not expressing outrage at the fact that CBS is blowing the cover on an ongoing FBI investigation of what would amount to treason inside the Pentagon.
I mean, come on. What would the reaction have been, in 1985, if CBS had reported, "The FBI is about to arrest Jonathan Pollard as a spy for Israel."
This situation is so weird that I suspect something much deeper is being covered up.
CBS maintains that the information passed on to Israel by its mole in the Pentagon was classified. Emerson, on CNN, stressed that Israel and the US often share intelligence because they are such close allies---and therefore this might not really be such a big deal. Emerson is in the classic mold of "it's us versus them and them is al Qaeda and militant Islam, and therefore Israel is a key player with us in the struggle."
